Plastic Surgery in 2017: Looking Ahead!
The year of 2016 is quickly going to be behind us. That’s how time works when we get to this part of the year. It just goes by in a flash! Before you know it, 2017 will be here and we’ll be looking forward to all the wonderful things that might happen in the coming twelve months. That’s true for plastic surgery as well.
Because every year brings something new with plastic surgery. It’s one of the fastest changing and quickly growing fields in the medical arena. When it comes to plastic surgery, there’s constant innovation—and that’s a great thing for our patients. So let’s take a look at plastic surgery in 2017. But we’ll start with a little year in review.
After all, if we’re going to be predicting the big new trends of the coming year, it helps to take a look back at what made a plash in 2016.
Plastic Surgery Trends of 2016
When we look at the broader trends of plastic surgery in 2016, there are a few things that certainly stand out. As has been the case for the past number of years, non surgical procedures such as Botox or Juvederm continue to increase in popularity. It’s easy to see why. These injectables offer excellent short term results with little interruption to your daily life.
But there are a few other trends that we’ve noticed as well:
- Plastic surgery for men: More popular than ever, plastic surgery for men isn’t necessarily something new—but it is something that’s been trending. More and more men are seeking out plastic surgery procedures. Because of that, a new subset of options have been developed that augment or compliment the more masculine features men are typically seeking. This has led to procedures such as “Botox for Men” or “Tummy Tuck for Men.” As these more male-centered techniques become more popular, we think you’ll see continued growth in the “plastic surgery for men” field—well into 2017 and beyond.
- Tummy Tuck and Liposuction: Both tummy tuck and liposuction procedures have been popular for a long time. In fact, they’ve been a mainstay of the plastic surgery industry for decades. However, the fact that they’re still popular (and that they’re even more popular when combined) is still worth noting. In fact, tummy tuck and liposuction make such a great combination because they each address different areas. The liposuction eliminates unwanted fat while the tummy tuck eliminates unwanted excess skin. Getting both procedures helps you to look slim and fit!
- Breast Procedures: As with tummy tuck and liposuction, breast procedures (broadly defined) have enjoyed sustained popularity for quite some time. In fact, there are few procedures as synonymous with plastic surgery as breast augmentation. But 2016 did see some substantial changes, from the emphasis on breast augmentation revision procedures to the use of fat grafting as a popular implant method. With fat graft procedures, a liposuction procedure is performed to remove fat from the body. That fat is then purified and injected into the breast in order to increase the breast size. There’s no arguing that 2016 has been a huge year for fat graft breast augmentation procedures. (Though it should be noted that in most cases, surgeons still prefer using silicone implants.)
A Look Ahead to 2017
Now that we’ve taken a bit of time to reflect on 2016, we can take a look ahead to 2017. And there are several predictions we can make about the future of plastic surgery. Though we should, of course, mention that these predictions are in no way supposed to be taken as having any kind of certainty to them. That is, the future is unpredictable, and we’re basically just guessing here.
That said, we do have a few guesses about what might happen in the next twelve months or so:
- An increased emphasis on minimally invasive procedures: We expect that 2017 will see more procedures that are designed to be minimally invasive. This might even include procedures that haven’t even been developed yet or new techniques to perform current procedures. We’ve seen this a little bit already with injectables such as Kybella (though it should be noted that Kybella is a non surgical procedure, not a minimally invasive procedure), which is designed to eliminate unwanted fat around the jawline. The less invasive a procedure is, the more quickly a patient heals and the faster recovery can be accomplished.
- More fat graft procedures: It all started with Brazilian Butt Lift, a procedure that continues to explode in popularity. And since the Brazilian Butt Lift is so popular, we’ve also seen a number of other fat graft procedures (include fat graft facelifts and fat graft breast augmentation) become popular as well. It won’t surprise us, then, when even more fat graft procedures increase in popularity (and novelty). We expect to see a good number of new fat graft techniques introduced in 2017.
