Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)
Reshaping the Ear
The ear is so important to the overall proportions of the face, though it’s often overlooked by people. Ear reshaping is most often performed as a reconstructive surgery, though it may sometimes be used to accomplish cosmetic goals. Often used to treat protruding ears, ear reshaping shows almost immediate results, bringing balance and proportion to the face.

Who is a Good Candidate?
Because of its reconstructive nature, ear reshaping is sometimes performed on children. In that case, children should be at least five years old, to give the cartilage in the ear time to permanently set. As with adults, children should understand the implications of the surgery they’re undergoing. All candidates should be in generally good health and have no underlying conditions that could hamper healing.
The Otoplasty Procedure
The ear is forgiving, because there are many places to hide any scars that surgery might leave. In most cases, incisions are made on the back of the ear, and that’s also where stitches are administered. Most sutures are implemented on the interior of the ear, which holds the keeps the ear closer to the head and, therefore, more proportional. If incisions must be made on the front of the ear, they are usually limited to one of the easily hidden folds the ear provides.
Because ear reshaping covers a wide variety of underlying causes, Dr. Polsen will determine a unique and personalized course of action for all his Houston Area clients. This includes anesthesia, which sometimes is administered locally and is sometimes administered as general anesthesia. Dr. Polsen will work with you determine what method will yield the best results.
Dr. Polsen is experienced in performing this procedure on both adults and children, and is familiar with the differences that each necessitate.
Recovery
Special care must be taken not to undermine the results of the ear reshaping after surgery. A special headband must be worn to reduce swelling, generally for up to 72 hours. However, many surgeons recommend a headband be worn during sleep for up to three months to avoid accidental ear pulling.
The most intense pain generally subsides in a few days and can be managed with appropriate pain medications. Dr. Polsen will provide you with a detailed recovery plan to ensure your comfort and your results.
